When UPNP was invented, it allowed developers to have their software temporarily open ports and direct traffic to your device and then close the ports when the software is stopped. Before UPNP existed (back in the 90s), to play video games people had to manually type in port ranges to open holes in your shield that stayed open forever and directed all traffic through those holes to one device.

A port is like a small hole in that shield that allows communication to go through. Think of your router like a shield that protects you from the outside world (and also makes more plugs for other devices in your house). Zenimax's utilization of UPNP is not forwarding the proper ports for some people which is causing problems. Most games properly utilize UPNP (universal plug 'n play) to forward all the necessary ports to ensure the game and the chat runs properly. If you update your firmware and enable UPNP and it still doesn't work (but the direct cable modem test worked) then your last resort would be to try a 3rd party firmware such as tomato or dd-wrt.or buy a new router. Even if your router is 2 months old it could have sat on the store shelf for more than a year and the firmware could be outdated. Update your router firmware to the latest version from the router manufacturer's webpage. Look for a UPNP feature and make sure it is enabled. Go to your router setup page (typically or ). If it does work when you plug directly into the modem then that means your router is not configured properly. If it doesn't, it could mean you have some kind of router/modem all-in-one device which is not configured properly.

If you have cable internet and you plug it directly into your cable modem with no router then it should connect. Try unplugging your router and plugging the ps4 directly into your cable modem or gateway device for testing purposes only.
